Educational Background

Atty. Farren graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1968 and Juris Doctor (JD) from Harvard Law School in 1971.

Work Experience

He began his legal career at Dewey, Ballantine in New York as an associate in its trusts and estates department. Atty. Farren joined the practice of Charles Korn in 1977 to handle Mr. Korn’s estate practice but was soon introduced to Mr. Korn’s active real estate practice.

Upon the closure of Mr. Korn’s office in 1982, Atty. Farren joined the firm of Friedman, Leeds, and Shorenstein, representing primarily real estate developers and tax shelter syndicators. He continued to handle estate planning for entrepreneurial clients as well as probate matters.

He has been employed by the campaigns for candidates for state wide political office as a tax analyst on multiple occasions.

In 1994, he was appointed by then Governor-Elect Pataki to head the transition team on environmental issues in New York. In 1995, he organized a task force to create a “green building” tax credit, the first in the nation, which was enacted into law in 1999. He has served as a board member of the New York League of Conservation Voters since 2002. He was named a Super Lawyer in 2009 for his work on environmental matters.

He has been appointed by the New York County Supreme Court to mediate more than 20 cases, successfully settling more than two-thirds of those cases. He has also served as an arbitrator on several occasions, including a recent panel at the American Arbitration Association.

In the last twenty years, Atty. Farren has become involved in multiple litigations, a number of which are related to real estate.

Reminders When Selecting an Attorney

The focus of the lawyer’s practice and their years of experience are important factors when choosing an attorney. The breadth of Atty. Farren’s practice, sometimes in great detail in particular areas, provides his clients, particularly entrepreneurial clients, with a resource that quickly identifies potential legal issues and simplifies their decision-making process.

However, the length and scope of practice can be both positive and negative for an attorney, so do not make decisions based solely on one or two factors. We recommend that you contact other lawyers and/or law firms before settling on a legal representative.
